Growing Up as a Teen
A heartfelt conversation on identity, uncertainty, and staying true to yourself.
By Tanvi, Year 10 · Happy Being
Hi everyone,
So, I'm 15. Well, I just turned 15 last month, and I'm in Year 10. That means I'm smack in the middle of figuring everything out — who I am, what I want, what kind of person I want to become — while still being expected to do well in school, choose my subjects for senior years, and somehow not crash out over it all.
Growing up as a teenage girl in Sydney comes with its own vibe. It's exciting and full of possibilities, but also kind of overwhelming. There's this constant noise — social media, school stress, trying to be independent but still needing help, trying to express yourself but also not wanting to be “too much.”
Sometimes it feels like everyone wants you to grow up fast, but no one really prepares you for how confusing that is.
Right now, I'm in the middle of choosing subjects for Year 11 and 12. Everyone keeps asking, “What are you going to do in the future?” And honestly, I don't entirely know. But I do know what I love!
I love performing. I've been dancing for almost my whole life but recently acting has felt like home to me, stepping into another world, becoming a different person, telling stories that connect people. Whether it's on stage or on screen, acting lets me express the parts of myself I sometimes can't put into words.
I've also acquired interest in Space. Not in a “just stargazing” kind of way, but in a “let's talk about black holes and time dilation” kind. I want to study the stars, the planets, and the things we can't even see yet. I want to understand how the universe works and maybe be part of discovering something that's never been known before. And I can't lie but part of the reason may or may not be that I am OBSESSED with Marvel. I know acting and astronomy sound like two completely different paths, but to me, they're both ways of exploring the unknown — one with emotions and the other with science.
At home, life is a bit more normal. I have a little sister in Year 2, who is super annoying but that's normal. I still love her, though (even though she cries for no reason).
Sometimes I wish I could slow things down. Being a teenager feels like everything is happening all at once. You're trying to hold on to the last pieces of your childhood while the world is already pushing you into the future. You start to notice how people treat you differently. You start to compare yourself to others more, even when you know you shouldn't. You start learning that growing up isn't just about getting older — it's about building resilience, learning who deserves your energy, and figuring out how to be true to yourself in a world that often wants you to be something else.
The Good Days
There are good days too, days when I laugh so hard with my friends it feels like I'm flying, days when I feel proud of something I created or understood in class, days when I look up at the stars and feel like maybe, just maybe, I'm right where I need to be.
Growing up isn't simple. It's a mix of uncertainty, growth, passion, and discovering your voice.
I'm learning that I don't need to have everything figured out right now. I just need to stay curious, stay kind, and stay open to whatever comes next — whether that's a telescope, a script, or something I haven't even imagined yet.
Thank you.
